Our focus this year will be to get more folks back onto their bicycles. Our noncycling initiatives are very important, but we have to get back to and maintain a strong base of active riders in order to make a success of any event that our club hosts. To that end we are already discussing some exciting events to challenge all the riders in our club.
Here are a few examples:
- “50 miler club”: Any BVC member (dues must already have been paid) who completes at least 50 miles in a single day (BVC hosted or other event) will join the “BVC 50-miler Club” with official recognition at the monthly club meeting.
- “100 miler club”: Any BVC member (dues must already have been paid) who completes at least 100 miles in a single day (BVC hosted or other event) will join the “BVC 100-miler Club” with official recognition at the monthly club meeting.
- DJ Watt plans on developing a group of riders who want to complete their first century ride in 2012. If you’ve never completed a 100 mile ride and you have the desire to achieve this milestone, this will be the way to go for you. Over the season you will build up strength and endurance to be able to complete your first century this summer. Dave Phillips led this initiative 2 years ago with great success and today our club has several centurions in our midst due to that initiative.
- For our single speed and fixed gear riders, we are planning a century ride (100 miles) with only 1 gear. This should pose a very unique challenge to most riders.
- For our serious long-distance members we are hosting our first double century challenge (200 Burlington Velo Club: Newsletter Issue 1 3 | P a g e miles) on June 16th this year. The plan is to ride from Greensboro to Myrtle Beach in 1 day. The ride is called “Double Down to the Beach” and will be open to the public. Cost is $30 per participant. The departure will be at 5:30am from Cycles de Oro in Greensboro, NC and we will finish at Beach Bike Shop in Myrtle Beach, SC, covering a total distance of 204 miles in 1 day. More information will be posted soon with regards to this event.
