BVC Update - May 24th 2010

We have had quite an eventful few weeks and want to use this opportunity to share some pertinent information with members and friends of our club.

Ride for Nicholas Weis

The Ride for Nicholas Weis was held on Sunday, May 16th and we raised a total of $2,412.  We are super excited to hand over the check to the Weis family at our next club meeting.  The Weis family have been invited to attend our next club meeting as special guests.  Thanks to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this event a success.  Special kudos to Shelby Jacobs for her leading role in getting this off the ground.   Our plan is to continue events such as these on an annual basis where we will reach out to members of our local community.  Special thanks to our sponsors for their support of the event.  We will be sending out personal notes of thanks on behalf of our club and its members.

BVC Cycling Clothes

Our team cycling clothes have arrived and it looks awesome.   Allan Jacobs currently has the clothes with him and he will bring the clothes to The Fat Frogg prior to Wednesday evening’s ride.  If you ordered cycling clothes from the club, please pick up your items at The Fat Frogg parking lot at 5:45pm this coming Wednesday.  You can even change into your new spiffy clothes right before the 6pm ride.  We are also planning our next clothing order next week so if you would like to order BVC club cycling clothes, please email your order to Allan Jacobs ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. BVC Race Team

The BVC race team has been going from strength to strength and we‘ve already picked up 2 medals in official races.  James Allen and Allan Jacobs have been flying the BVC flag in competition with Allan bringing home 2 3rd places already.  James has been close to cracking the podium with a few top 10 finishes.  Unfortunately Deon Louw crashed in his first race (notching a DNF) and has not been back in competition yet while he recovers.  Christian Cederholm has been training with Allan and we eagerly await his debut on the circuit pretty soon.  We know of several other folks who have expressed an interest in racing for BVC.  If you are interested in joining our race team, please contact Allan Jacobs who heads up this initiative.  We would love to expand our race team in our debut season.

We also ask our club members to support our race team especially when they race locally.  The Ace Speedway Series is a criterium style event that takes place on Ace Speedway in Altamahaw every 2nd Tuesday night.  The series consists of 10 races in total of which 3 have already been completed.  The races start at 6pm sharp and last only 30 minutes.  The next race is on Tuesday, June 1st at 6pm.  We’re hoping to have our expanded race team participate at this event so look out for a few racing debuts being made on the track.

BVC Club Helmets

Dale Brown (owner of Cycles de Oro) is currently negotiating a price with helmet manufacturer Bell in order to provide BVC club helmets to the BVC.  The helmet is the Bell Array (pictured right).  The yellow and black theme of the helmet compliments our cycling kit perfectly. As soon as we have finalized a price with Dale, we will publish that information.

Upcoming Fun Rides

There has been a lot o of talk of the Blood, Sweat and Gears ride on June 26th (http://www.wataugaredcross.com/bsg/main/start.htm). Several of our club members are participating in that ride.  It is a pretty grueling event that takes place in one of the most scenic areas of our state and is always very well supported.

In an effort to prepare for this hilly event, we have planned a 100 mile social bike ride on Saturday, June 12th.  The ride will start at The Fat Frogg in Elon at 8am and head to Chapel Hill where we will have lunch (after 50 miles).  On the way back we will ride through Saxapahaw and stop for refreshments at Saxapahaw General Store (after 75 miles).  Thereafter we will head back to Elon and end with a total of 103 miles.  If you feel that you want to ride but cannot do 100 miles, we suggest that you leave a car in Chapel Hill prior to the ride so that you only do 50 miles to Chapel Hill and drive yourself back, or get a family member or friend to pick you up in Chapel Hill to bring you back.  We plan on having lunch at Hams on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.  The route for this event can be found here http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/nc/elon,-burlington,-chapel-hill/479127112195436627.

Since this century ride to Chapel Hill is in 3 weekends’ time, Deon Louw is planning a longer than usual social training ride this coming Saturday (May 29th).  It will be a 65 mile ride to Yanceyville and back.  The route for this coming Saturday’s ride can be found here http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/nc/elon/193127472056748504.  We will plan on stopping in Yanceyville for refreshments.  Saturday social rides start at 8am at The Fat Frogg parking lot.

Road-ID update

We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the Road-ID email from last week and have subsequently applied for BVC to join Road-ID’s affiliate program.  As soon as we get the 20% discount coupon, we will share that information with you and also add the necessary links to our website. We will notify you when that happens so that you can get your Road-ID’s at a discount as soon as possible.

Keep the rubber side down, the wind in your back and stay safe.
