BVC members and friends,
In the next couple of weeks, the club will need to transition to its
Winter riding schedule and city routes.
In order to make this transition as smooth and successful as possible,
the club needs your help. The Winter riding schedule is much more
relaxed and informal than our warm weather training schedules.
Ideally, in order to keep cycling accessible for anyone that wishes to
join us for a ride, we should keep to the four nights per week riding
schedule. This can only be successfully accomplished if you, our
members and friends, make it happen. The Winter schedule and routes
should start at 6pm departing from the Fat Frogg (or, if you wish to
be a ride leader, wherever you may want to start from). The routes
will typically stay within the city limits and preferably on streets
that are not heavily traveled by automobile traffic. There are a few
city routes on the BVC website as examples of established and
successful routes used in the past.
This is where the club needs its members to step up and act as ride
leaders. There are no real category breakdown of rides in the winter,
as everyone should try to stay in as large of a group as possible for
visibility and safety concerns. This makes it easier to lead a ride,
as the speeds and distances within city routes are much shorter/slower
and almost always at a conversational pace (10-16mph). There may be a
few riders that wish to break away from the pack and ride a faster
pace, which is completely acceptable. Just remain with the group speed
that you feel most comfortable with and you will always have someone
to ride with. Of course, front and rear lights are required as well as
reflective strips and clothing. Dress appropriately for the weather,
as some rides may be held all the way into the 30's.
Since the rides are held at a conversational pace, they can go for a
couple of hours with rest stops at coffee shops, or possibly a hot
soup ride on chilly nights, to a short, brisk 1 hour ride that is just
enough to keep those legs in shape and get the blood flowing. Look for
rides during daylight hours on Weekends as well as a Christmas lights
tour and possibly a bonfire ride later in the season.
We have all worked very hard to grow as cyclists and increase our
fitness level. Let's keep that growth going throughout the off-season
by leading and participating in the City night rides. Please contact
